When James Glave arrived at Oakland International Airport and went to retrieve the rental car he had reserved over the Internet, he was dismayed to learn that the agency not only required his driver's license and payment information, but also his thumbprint.
The New Mexico-based magazine editor said he found out about the requirement when he walked up to the Dollar Rent A Car counter and noticed a display featuring a drawing of a big thumb making the A-OK sign with the words "Thumbs Up!" printed on it.
The display explained that thumbprints were being collected from customers as part of an effort to reduce fraud and theft, Glave said.
When he refused to fork over his digit, the employee refused to rent him a car.

What are your thoughts on companies collecting biometrics? As a consumer, do you think your privacy is being invaded? What can we as individuals do about our privacy being invaded? As a manager of a company collecting this information, how can/would you respond to the privacy issues? Is there other issues here besides privacy?
This is a very touchy issue because a company can see it as a security issue in protecting their property and consumers can see it as an invasion of privacy.
What you think on this topic. Please feel free to share your thoughts on this article in the January Gazette Bistro discussion.
SACRAMENTO, California -- Carmakers say electric vehicles may soon put a dent in the sales of America's gas-guzzlers.
But convincing car buyers to use a technology that many people associate with
golf carts and taking seniors to bingo will require navigating serious
obstacles.

In December's Ricci Street Gazette, there was an article called "Shippers Wrestle with Box Issue". In the Gazette Bistro Discussion, I asked:
Why do companies ship small items in large boxes, wasting space, creating more disposable waste and driving up shipping costs? As a manager, how can you balance shipping expediency, keeping company costs low, keeping shipping costs low for consumers, and packaging waste?
Kevin Connelly gave a very good Bistro response to this topic. Check out Kevin's response!
There are two organizations at Medaille for the MBA graduate students, MBA Student Organization (MBASO) and the Graduate Student Council (GSC) .
The MBASO serves as a liaison between MBA students and the Student Government Association, faculty, administration, and the Office of Student Affairs. They serve to preserve and enhance the projects and activities which contribute to the quality of MBA student life. The MBASO looks out for the interests of the MBA students. Any MBA student interested in joining the MBASO or has questions, contact the MBASO President, Amr Abbas.
The Graduate Student Council serves as the official representative organization of the graduate student body, MBA and MSEd. It serves as the liaison between the student body and the Office of Student Affairs. It protects the rights of the individual and promotes the general welfare of the graduate student body of Medaille College.
The Council, under the guidance of Clayton Steen, is made up of representatives from both the MBA and the MSEd graduate programs. The current representatives are:
| MBA Representatives | MS Ed Representatives |
| Sheila Traficante | Karen Pasternak |
| Stephanie Malinenko | Karen Jackson |
| Gina Carnricke | Felicia Hanesworth |
The council is working on a constitution which will detail the purpose and makeup of the organization. They are also developing a formal complaint process for the graduate students, looking into fundraising ideas, and addressing online registration in the near future.
Any registered graduate student is welcome to attend any Council meetings. Students are encouraged to listen, participate, and submit ideas. The next scheduled GSC meeting is January 26, 2002. Any graduate student interested in becoming a representative or has questions about the council, contact Sheila Traficante or Stephanie Malinenko.
Due to student requests, the following class changes have been made to the Spring 2002 class schedule.

Do you ever wonder why your laptop may seem to run slower than it used to? Have you ever pondered what causes this to happen?
A big factor in this is you laptop's hard drive. You can think of a hard drive as a file cabinet. You have folders (directories) that are contained in the file cabinet (hard drive). If you do not periodically clean up the file cabinet, you may find that pages (files) have been lost or misplaced (lost clusters). Or, if the space where a folder is kept is too small, then you may split the folder into smaller pieces and distribute them to places that you have room to store them.
Likewise, the more software and data you have on your laptop, the more files get split up. This causes you hard drive to get fragmented. There are several utilities that will help to manage your files.
1) Disk Cleanup is a windows utility that clears your hard disk of unnecessary files to free disk space. This utility will free up drive space by deleting temporary files, emptying your recycle bin, and other unnecessary files.
2) Scandisk is a windows utility that checks your files and directories for errors.
3) Disk Defragmenter is a windows utility that reorganizes you files to make your laptop run faster and more efficiently.
Click on the appropriate link for a demo on how scandisk and disk defragmenter works.
Note: The demos only work in the HTML version of the Ricci Street Gazette
