In the case of shipping boxes, sometimes good things come in packages that are strikingly large, regardless of the size of the item being shipped.
Amazon.com regularly ships two CDs in a box measuring 12 by 9 by 4 inches, roughly the size of a shoebox. A pack of paperclips is delivered in a similar-size box from Office Depot. A box from Gateway looks like it could hold a stack of books; instead, the package contains four software discs barely more than an inch thick.
This waste disturbs conscientious consumers and environmentalists, but businesses that ship these boxes claim expediency. They say they are trying to meet fulfillment demands. But in some cases, they are simply inexperienced in packaging knowledge altogether.
Why do companies ship small items in large boxes, wasting space, creating more disposable waste and driving up shipping costs?
Simply put, some companies believe it's cost-effective.

What do you think about companies shipping merchandise in boxes that are a lot larger than the items shipped in them?

LONDON -- The "cookie," a simplistic identification tag that most Internet users unknowingly carry when surfing the Web, runs the risk of being outlawed under a proposed privacy directive from the European Commission.
The legislation has triggered concern in Europe's Internet advertising community. The Interactive Advertising Bureau UK (IAB) said British companies could lose 187 million pounds ($272.1 million) if the directive is ratified.
"Cookies have been branded as spyware tools, or some kind of subversive software," Danny Meadows-Klue, chairman of the IAB United Kingdom, told Reuters. "But it's what we use everyday."

What do you think about Europe trying to ban companies from using cookies on the internet? How does this affect the strategies of companies using the cookie information for business decisions?

As Ricci Street editor, I thought I would introduce myself....
My name is Ann Geiger. I started in Medaille's MBA program this fall with MBA504. I came into the program with an extensive pc background.
I started working with computers in school in 1982 (on a teletype machine between my school and another school), followed by several programming classes.
My undergraduate studies were at Canisius College. I received my Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science and Management Information Systems. One summer, I participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates where I taught (programmed) a robot to detect objects in it's path and to move around the objects.
My first job was working in a data center running backups on weekends. After college, I was a pc specialist for The Brookings Institution in Washington, DC and then later a PC Engineer at Merchants Insurance Group in downtown Buffalo. In these positions, I configured, installed, and troubleshot problems with pc / network hardware / software. I also helped users in both a classroom environment and on a one-on-one basis.
If you want to know more on my background, visit my plaza web.
Due to student requests, the following class changes have been made to the Spring 2002 class schedule.

The MBA Student Organization is looking for someone to maintain the MBASO web site. More Information.
The gazette is being revived after about a year or so. We are looking for some ideas for articles, interesting web sites, tutorials, tips and tricks, questions that you would like answered or anything else students might find interesting.
Please forward you thoughts and ideas to Ann Geiger so that they can be added to future issues.
I'd like to introduce Ann Geiger. Beyond the biographical and professional details she provides at her Plaza web, I know her as a caring person who started helping others the moment she entered the MBA 504 classroom in August 2001.
With the encouragement of Drs. Faith Burke and Joe Savarese, Ann is pioneering a new role for the Medaille MBA program. First and foremost, she is here to help students, especially as they grapple with computer technology. You can reach her via instant messaging, face-to-face during scheduled office hours, anytime via private email, or the organized public messages at the Bistro where she will host the MBA Student Organization forums. In addition, Ann will edit the Ricci Street Gazette and serve as the webmaster for the Parkside Plaza student webs. If she has any time left, there are plenty of housekeeping chores such as the monthly Traffic Report to keep her busy.
Under Ann's stewardship, the Gazette will be in good hands and I am happy to pass the reins to her. I look forward to working with Ann and I hope you find her as helpful as I do. Please make her feel welcome.
Cheers,
Doug
Are you seeing errors on your laptop? Have you recently gotten the blue windows error screen? Have you had some really weird things happen on your laptop that you can not explain? Have you ever wondered where you start to troubleshoot some of these problems?
Needless to say, there is very little software released that is 100% bug free. Software companies often release updates to their software to take care of the bugs. Microsoft has done this for their Windows products.
There are several ways to get to the Windows Update page. The easiest is to start Internet Explorer. Click on Tools and then Windows Update in the menu. This brings you to the Windows Update page. Click on Product Updates.
Windows 98 laptops will want to download at least the following updates: all critical updates, root certificate update, Windows IDE hard drive cache package, storage supplement update, mapped drives shutdown update, active accessibility update, 128 bit dialup networking, and any other options that you feel are needed.
Windows ME laptops will want to download at least the following updates: all critical updates, root certificate update, Windows IDE hard drive cache package, and any other options that you feel are needed.
Windows ME also has a new feature that you may want to update: Keeping windows up to date automatically. This will automatically update any critical updates when they become available.
This Mod there are a lot of students taking MBA502 - Math for Managers. Several people are having problems with some of the concepts. Here are a couple sites that I found with tutorials that might be helpful. Take a look and see if you like these:
