The categories on this page are not discrete. A given site could be in a different category elsewhere on this page or on the B2B page or the e-sources page. The three pages together will give you an idea of the current (April 2000) range of e-commerce and of the vocabulary used to discuss it.

Where do they market?

A pure-play Web marketer like PaintingsDirect.com has no physical stores. It markets online only and thus globally, at least to those who know English.

Louretta's is a clicks and bricks (also called clicks and mortar) small business in Western New York that until recently marketed only locally. Now that they have a web site, they do about 15% of their business online.

From the language choices and the links to the world maps, you can see that the Biriwa Beach Hotel in Ghana, West Africa, markets globally.

Trying to replicate the success of Amazon.com, European media giant Bertlesmann is marketing to the EU countries.

Prominently on their home page, Peapod.com makes it clear that they deliver regionally: Austin, Boston, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Long Island, San Francisco/San Jose.

What do they market?

Drugstore.com sells the same wide variety of physical products that Fed Ex would deliver.

ItalianSunglasses.com has a more narrow focus, sometimes called niche marketing.

Jasc.com sells downloadable software -- products made out of bits, not atoms. The Internet acts as the delivery vehicle. Similarly, PublishingOnline.com sells "books", though that word is a little misleading for such a product.

If you email Kodak your digital photos, they'll return prints on paper. If they don't, start-ups like ClubPhoto.com, Ofoto.com, PhotoIsland.com and Shutterfly.com are offering a range of ancillary services that almost overwhelm the their prints business. What are you there to "buy", the prints or the services.

Accenture doesn't market a product at all, whether atoms or bits. You buy the consulting services of its employees.

How do they market?

You buy a Gateway PC directly from the company.

You buy Nike sneakers indirectly from Dick's Sporting Goods.

Delta distributes tickets for their own flights. When you book the same flight at Expedia and ask for a paper ticket, it will come in an Expedia envelope. The charge to your credit card is to Delta Air. If the paper ticket doesn't come in time, you call Expedia, not Delta. You then pick up your ticket at the airport, "pre-paid" by Expedia.

EBay and Onsale are traditional auction sites, where buyers compete, driving up the price.

The reverse happens at Priceline.com. As William Shatner is pleased to tell you, name your price and the sellers will match it. imandi -- reverse auction. InsWeb -- reverse auction for insurance.

eWork Exchange brings together new-media freelancers and those who need their services.

CarsDirect and AutoWeb buy cars in volume from dealers to resell them to their online customers.
