Where business is done on the Web.

This page categorizes the online businesses that provide services to other online businesses. The categories are not discrete; please suggest other ways of categorizing these services. A given site could be in a different category elsewhere on this page or on the B2B page or the B2C page. The pages together will give you an idea of the current (November 2000) range of e-commerce and of the vocabulary used to discuss it.

Financial Services

Pushing Everything Online
by Rutrell Yasin
InternetWeek, October 27, 2000

Many financial services firms are looking to leverage the growth of online marketplaces with their strong franchises and capabilities to settle transactions. While e-marketplaces in a number of industries help cut the manufacturing and distribution costs of companies that trade commodities, they can also expose companies to the financial risks of credit, transactions and settlement of payments. This has caused many companies to hesitate trading online.

Brand Intelligence

ImageLock searches for other sites using your brand or logo or anything else. Businesses can monitor and protect on-line use of their intellectual property. Recently, InfoWorld posted an interview with Ken Belanger: ImageLock's CTO hopes to outperform other search engines by providing analysis:

This is what we do for Chanel: We say, "Here are all the Web sites in America and Europe that use the Chanel logo, that are not selling perfume, and that are selling Chanel products."

Then I can tell them all the [sites] that are using the Chanel name, that are not selling perfume, and that are not selling [Chanel] products. They can then figure out who's using the Chanel name without permission. We can do all of that analysis, whereas other search engines can't.
