Introduction

As far as learning objectives, I would hope that in looking around this website, which focuses on immersive educational environments, that you will be able to answer the following questions once you are done clicking around here:

•        - Understand what IDE’s are

•        - Recognize the relationship between IDE’s and education

•        - See first-hand some possibilities of what the future of education has in store

•        - Understand how E-Learning ties into IDE’s

•        - Question yourself:

                - Do you believe these
immersive educational environments
really improve comprehension as compared to traditional environments?
                - Do you think this is the next step for technology and education?

Background on Immersive Digital Environments

An immersive digital environment is an artificial, interactive, computer-created scene or "world" within which a user can immerse themselves.  The factors that make an IDE effective are the user, 3D graphics, surround sound, simplicity, functionality, and potential for enjoyment/engagement.

Many of us have been exposed to immersive digital environments and not even realized it!  Good examples include computer games such as PacMan, Massively Multiplayer Online Games such as Shattered Galaxy, and Simulation games like The Sims Online.

According to the site below, IDE's are the future of education!

“The reason is that research has shown that kids engage deeply in virtual environments, gaining a conceptual and ethical understanding of school subjects, according to education experts.  And many kids are already comfortable socializing online, so educationally oriented virtual worlds can offer that same sort of stimulus and use that potential to aid learning.”

•    "Based on our results thus far, we're excited about how these environments can provide immersive,

engaging simulations that complement lectures, textbooks, labs and field trips as part of an effective science

{for example} curriculum.” – Chris Dede, Harvard Professor

"As a teaching supplement, this is the wave of the future.”

“In regard to teaching an inner-city kid about Rome and its ancient art, politics and society, for example, a

virtual world can spark the child's imagination more than a textbook filled with beautiful pictures can, Gallas

said.  Virtual environments, ironically, offer the feeling of reality."
