To both his Chinese hosts and his Jesuit sponsors, Matteo Ricci was a maverick. He was an alien to the Chinese and such an independent thinker that the gospel he preached left out the part about Christ's resurrection and ascension.

A spa tries to create life as it should be lived: get enough exercise, relax, eat right, and feast the senses. In academia, we call this stuff the Liberal Arts: solve problems, think clearly, know what's going on, make things look good. Real life, unfortunately, is not like a spa any more than it's like the CyberSea Inn. Regardless of what they say, organizations don't usually reward independent thinkers.
